2006 Tour In Progress

Despite the wet and windy conditions we made the decision to set off on our Summer 2006 tour on May 18th as scheduled!

Having had such fantastic weather on our Scotland break I suppose it was only a matter of time before the 'Traditional British Summer' arrived, but who cares were off and running!
Our family, friends and anyone else for that matter can keep up to date with our travels by clicking the main link opposite or HERE to access our Travel-Log.
We will be posting bi-weekly from aboard Quidditch using our GPRS link so stay stuned!
Anyway, that's it for now, keep an eye on our 'Travel-Log' and we'll see you all when we return in October........

HAPPY SAILING.......

Highland Break

We're now back from our Highland Break and completing the final touches to 'Quidditch' before setting sail on Thursday.
Our break in Scotland was fantastic! Good weather, great wildlife and some interesting people. Having already seen and posted some excellent wildlife sightings I thought things couldn't get any better. But they did!!
Around an hours drive from our cottage we arrived at Loch Ruthvin RSPB reserve on Thursday afternoon. We knew that the site was renown for having Slavonian Grebes. This is bird that has so far managed to evade my birding 'Life List'. We were not disappointed! Immediately on entering the reserve we spotted two. On arrival at the hide we caught up with Trisha Roberts the assistant warden who also pointed out a pair of Red Throated Divers, another for my list! Both grebe and Diver are pictured above.
Now completed, our journey was a 1,500 mile round trip. I'm certainly looking forward to laying up the old truck for the Summer and getting some canal hours in.
In summary we had a fantastic time and saw some wonderful sights. Except NESSIE!!
As always the Highlands of Scotland didn't let us down.....

Greetings From Scotland

Greetings From Scotlands....

Our week in a Scottish Highlands Cottage prior to setting sail for the Summer is halfway through and the weather has been extraordinary. We appear to be having some of the best weather in the UK thus far with the temperatures around 20c.
Our cottage looks out over an old graveyard with 'buried pirates' and out across the Cromarty Firth to view the mountains, some of which still have lying snow on them.
Yesterday from our cottage we drove out and visited Loch Ness. No sign of Nessie though! It was like home from home as we also visited The Caladonian Canal which joins Loch Ness with Loch Oich and then out onto the Cromarty Firth. No sign of any narrowboats though!
Although we haven't come to Scotland specifically for the 'birding' we always bring our binoculars, scope and camera. In truth we have actually spent a lot of the holiday though 'keeping our eye in' so to speak. You can imagine my astonishment yesterday evening when walking across to the waters edge after dinner when an aerial commotion revealed an Osprey being buzzed by several rooks! At tree top level this is by far the nearest I've ever been to an Osprey. It was astonishing. I watched in disbelief as the birds, still squabbling, flew out across the Firth. We've probably seen the same bird this morning which appears to hunt over our stretch of the Firth.
So far my birding list comprises of the usual suspects with a special mention for Black Throated Diver seen at Glen Doe Loch and Wheatear in the church yard.
Things got even better later today though when we visited the Moray Firth and RSPB Fairy Glen. We stopped enroute to see if we could spot any dolphins which frequent the Firth and was gifted with our first ever view of a wild Otter fishing just off the waters edge. An incredible sight. Later having walked the RSPB reserve we came across a pair of breeding Dipper's, another first! I managed to get some good images of a Dipper, one of which is above. Amazingly too our Orange Office Card is providing a good internet access where we are located which is another bonus and enables me to complete this post.
Can the holiday get any better?

A Night Out!

A 'Grand' night out on the Union.

As we move ever closer to our leaving date for our Summer Tour a visit from Dee's sister from Australia gave us an excuss to have a night out on the canal. Not that we need an excuse really!
Setting off yesterday (Sunday) at around 1pm from Wigram's we moored at our favourite spot on our local stretch at bridge 103. It seems that since we last came out in January the canal population has exploded! I don't think I can remember seeing so many new boats on the system. It's going to be interesting to see how busier the whole system has become in one year when we leave in a few weeks time!
We returned today around 3pm in a gusting westerly, (which made backing into our mooring more of a challenge). It's always fun to sit on the front cratch, which faces out onto the junction, binoculars and coffee in hand and watch the drama unfold. As boats return from thier weekend break and transverse the turn from the Oxford Canal onto the Grand Union you can guarantee some intersting moments, especially for a sadist like me!!!! MMM... Am I being a bit cruel do you think!!
